In 1988, the World Health Organization declared December 1 as World AIDS Day in order to raise awareness among the global community, increase public awareness of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and provide medical, material, and psychological support to people living with the disease.
At the initiative of the United Nations Joint Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS), this day is celebrated under the slogan "International Solidarity, Shared Responsibility".
