Department of Microbiology and Pharmacology

The Department of Microbiology was founded in the fall of 1919. The first head of the department was Professor Alexei Dmitrievich Grekov.

Since 1933, Professor V.D. Shtieben was appointed head of the department. Under his leadership, scientific work was carried out on streptococci (T.I. Medvedeva) and staphylococci (R.P. Kats).

From 1936 to 1964, the department was headed by Professor P.F. Samsonov.

Pavel Fyodorovich Samsonov defended his doctoral dissertation on brucellosis in 1942 and became a professor of the department and an honored scientist in the Uzbek SSR. He was one of the prominent scientists in the field of microbiology.

The scientific activity of the department in the period before the Great Patriotic War was devoted to the study of staphylococci (R.P. Kats, 1936), the role of enterococci in chronic ulcerative colitis (Drapkina A.V., 1938), the determination of the serological type of tuberculosis bacteria (1943), the assessment of the coli-titer of water in open water bodies by the milk-coagulase method (Grinevich A.T., 1945).

After the war, good specialists joined the pedagogical staff of the department. These were: Bobylev N.I. (1947 - associate professor), Akhmedzhanov Yu.A. (doctor of medical sciences), Merzhanov T.F., Sluchenkov E.D. This helped to improve the pedagogical activity in the field of microbiology at the department and expand the scope of scientific work.

Before and after the Great Patriotic War (1945-1964), scientific research was devoted to solving the problems of general microbiology, sanitary microbiology, joint and intestinal infections.

During the activities of Professor P.F. Samsonov from 1939 to 1964, 30 dissertations were defended at the department. The outstanding scientist Professor P.F. Samsonov did a great job in studying the infectious pathology of the region. He published a manual for practicing doctors on typhoid fever and other infections.

From 1964 to 1971, the department was headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences Yunus Akhmedzhanovich Akhmedzhanov. During these years, 12 candidate dissertations were defended at the department. In addition, 2 doctoral dissertations: Associate Professor L.I. Kartushin (topic: “The role of representatives of bacteriocenosis in the formation of long-term carriage of pharyngeal bacteria in the tonsils” and in 1966 Associate Professor Yu.A. Akhmedzhanov created the textbook “Fundamentals of Microbiology and Virology” in Uzbek and defended it in the form of a doctoral dissertation.

For many years, the Department of Microbiology has been conducting research on conditionally pathogenic bacteria (enterococcus, Escherichia coli, Proteus, etc.).

Since the 1950s, the Department has carried out many scientific works on the enzymatic and toxic properties of enterococci, the nature of the production of aggressive enzymes, their serological differentiation and phage identification (Yu.A. Akhmedzhanov, N.A. Akhmedov, R.F. Umarova, Sh.N. Kholtaev, G.G. Brussels, A.F. Folians and others). The etiological significance of enterococci in children's dyspepsia was determined (Kim L.P.).

Scientific work was also carried out in other areas. For example, in 1963, assistant professor H.M. Damkas participated in the development of an international manual on bacteriological diagnostics of gout.

Scientific workers (graduate students and assistants) trained at the Department of Microbiology in these years later became heads of departments in other places or became prominent scientists in scientific centers. For example, Professor L.I. Kartushina was the head of the Department of Microbiology at the Omsk Medical Institute, Professor Yu.E. Kocharovsky was the head of the Department of Microbiology at the TashGiDUV, and graduate student G.A. Abdirov worked as the rector of Nukus State University.

In the 70s, work on conditionally pathogenic microorganisms continued at the Department. During these years, 5 candidate and 1 doctoral dissertations (associate professor A.V. Folians) were defended.

Since May 1970, A.A. Abidov became a professor, from 1972 to 1975, /after a short time/ from 1976 to 1980 he headed the Department of Microbiology of the Tashkent State Medical Institute. During these years, the material and technical base of the department improved.

From 1975 to 1976, associate professor A.V. Folians headed it. After that, A.A. Abidov returned.

From 1980 to 1985 and from 1987 to 1990, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor F. Yu. Garib.

During these years, scientific work became more active. A new direction in clinical immunology was organized. An immunological laboratory was established at the department. In this laboratory, staff of the department, as well as staff of other departments and institutes of the Tashkent State Medical University, under the leadership of Professor F. Yu. Garib, developed and improved new methods for determining the immune status of the body.
